An Sinh Temple Festival: Honoring history and preserving heritage

As autumn arrives, the historic lands of An Sinh come alive with lively, sacred celebrations. Visiting the An Sinh Temple, a Special National Monument, in late September, travelers are immersed in clouds of reverent incense honoring the glorious Tran Dynasty while deeply sensing the enduring lifeblood of the nation's cultural heritage.

Returning to roots, touching a heroic past

Tucked away peacefully beneath the green pine canopy on the eastern slopes of Yen Tu mountain, An Sinh Temple has long held a unique spiritual center within the Tran Dynasty relic complex. Historical records show that in the spring of 1237, King Tran Thai Tong designated the Yen Tu region as an appanage for his elder brother, Prince An Sinh Tran Lieu. In 1381, the An Sinh Palace was established, serving as a sanctuary to worship the Tran kings and ancestral figures who pioneered and safeguarded the borders.

Early in the morning of September 30 (the 20th day of the seventh lunar month), with morning mist still clinging to moss-covered tile roofs, the pathways leading to the relic site blazed with multicolored festival flags. Pilgrims from all corners converged on the temple courtyard, united in reverence for their ancestors.

Amidst billowing incense smoke, traditional rituals such as the King Invocation, Ancestral Offering, Death Anniversary of Saint Tran, and Memorial Rites for the Tran Kings were executed with utmost solemnity and rigor by the Ha Long Bay - Yen Tu World Heritage Management Board and the Tran Family Executive Board. The sight of village elders, attired in traditional deep-blue ceremonial robes, pacing gracefully into the inner sanctum to offer incense evoked a profound sense of sacred continuity between the present and the ancients.

Having walked alongside the clan’s sacred rituals and grand ceremonies for nearly two decades, Tran Van Cuong, Chairman of the Quang Ninh Tran Family Executive Board, shared: "Such solemn holidays carry profound significance in the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people. They offer an opportunity for the Tran clan and citizens nationwide to gather, connect, and champion the noble traditions passed down by our forefathers. Returning to our An Sinh roots, younger generations gain a deeper appreciation for the wisdom and ethics of the Tran kings as a guiding light. Proud of a lineage honored by both nation and world as saints, deities, and sages, we continually remind ourselves to translate that pride into concrete action, from scholarship promotion and assisting those in hardship to joining hands with local authorities and the management board to safeguard and elevate our heritage sustainably".

The vitality of village festivals through community spirit

If the morning belongs to the sacred quietude of gratitude, the afternoon transforms the temple grounds into a vibrant, bustling village festival. The defining hallmark of this year’s celebration is its core motto: a festival of the community, serving the community, and for the community.

The festival courtyard and temple gates transformed into a lively arena for traditional sports and folk games organized in coordination with the An Sinh Ward People's Committee. Amidst thunderous drumbeats, spectators were captivated by fiercely contested women's soft volleyball matches across residential blocks, as well as high-stakes Chinese chess battles among senior elders.

Notably, the traditional clay-cracker contest (phao dat), a unique folk custom of the Northern Delta, set the festival atmosphere ablaze. Synchronized detonations echoing across the grounds drew roaring cheers from enthusiastic crowds. The joyful laughter of competitors mingling with the warm encouragement of visitors dissolved all social distances, restoring the festival to its true essence: a nexus for community bonding and passing down cultural values from generation to generation.

Beside folk games, the archaeological exhibition space displaying artifacts from An Sinh Temple welcomed thousands of visitors. Dragon heads, leaf-shaped tiles, and chrysanthemum-patterned bricks excavated from the earth stood as eloquent historical witnesses, offering visitors a tangible sense of the palace's former grandeur.

Positioning heritage on the global cultural stage

The 2026 An Sinh Temple Festival unfolds amid immense pride following the official recognition of the Yen Tu - Vinh Nghiem - Con Son, Kiep Bac Monuments and Landscape Complex as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Within this expansive heritage landscape, An Sinh Temple serves as a vital bridge connecting the tranquil meditative philosophy of Truc Lam Zen Buddhism with the illustrious political and military exploits of the Tran Dynasty.

This year's organization reflected a marked improvement in managerial professionalism by the Ha Long Bay - Yen Tu World Heritage Management Board and local authorities. Traffic diversion, parking arrangements, environmental sanitation, and service price controls were executed systematically. Gone are the days of overcrowding, aggressive vendor soliciting, or superstitious commercialization. An Sinh Temple emerged civil, pristine, green, clean, and welcoming to all travelers.

With each passing festival season, the flame of the historic Dong A martial spirit is rekindled. The An Sinh Temple Festival is more than an occasion for Quang Ninh residents to honor the past; it stands as a sturdy spiritual anchor, awakening endogenous strength and transforming invaluable heritage assets into a vital cultural engine driving the dynamic growth of Vietnam's mining heartland today.
