Van Don International Airport is going to officially resume operation on March 3, 2021, after the expiration of temporary closure in order to prevent the Covid-19 pandemic.
Previously, the order to shut down the operations of the airport, where 10 cases of Covid-19 were detected among security personnel, has also been effective from January 28 and last for 14 days. Authorities have further extended the airport closure until 12am on February 13 as a precautionary measure in the pandemic prevention and control.
According to the Quang Ninh provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Xuan Ky, this coronavirus hotspot has been controlled and completely extinguished. The airport is at the moment safe and ready to return to normal operation.
As planned, the airport will continue to offer daily flights on the Van Don-Ho Chi Minh City route and act as one of the designated airports for repatriation flights of Vietnamese citizens and foreign experts from abroad in the North of Vietnam.
Stricter regulations are going to be imposed amidst complex developments of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, all passengers will be required to complete mandatory medical declaration forms. The International Medical Quarantine Center and other relevant units will provide screening check-ups in order to detect any suspected cases through remote body temperature scanners. Moreover, both the hand luggage and suitcases of all passengers will be thoroughly disinfected in line with regulations.
Van Don International Airport (also known as Quang Ninh International Airport) is the first private airport in Vietnam, built and operated by local property development company Sun Group. The airport has a capacity of receiving 2.5 million passengers per year and is expected to expand to a capacity of welcoming five million passengers per year by 2030.
