On February 11, at the border demarcation line on Bac Luan II Bridge in Mong Cai 1 Ward, Quang Ninh Province (Viet Nam) and the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (China) jointly held a launching ceremony for the Mong Cai – Dongxing smart border gate. This pilot project marks a significant milestone in bilateral cooperation to develop a modern and smart border model.
Under the approved scheme, Bac Luan I Bridge will be equipped with biometric identification technology and automated border control gates to shorten immigration processing time and improve operational efficiency. At Bac Luan II Bridge, the two sides will pilot 5G-enabled autonomous freight vehicles, with a view to enabling 24/7 seamless customs clearance, reducing logistics costs and improving the efficiency of cross-border trade.
Implemented in two phases from 2026 to 2030, the project is envisioned as a model for border gates in Viet Nam. It is expected to advance Quang Ninh’s ambition of becoming a modern logistics and cross-border trade hub in northern Viet Nam in the new development phase, while serving as a driving force for deeper, more effective cooperation in economy, trade and tourism between Quang Ninh Province (Viet Nam) and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (China).
