The seamless fusion of tourism and gastronomy, deeply rooted in local identity, is emerging as a compelling attraction in its own right.

Experiencing Quang Ninh through local flavors

Cuisine has recently become a defining pillar of Quang Ninh’s tourism appeal. Culture here is not only something to admire but it also is something to taste, to experience, and to share. Each dish serves as a storyteller, conveying the land’s heritage, livelihoods, and way of life.

One of the year’s highlights was the Quang Ninh Food Festival 2025, held from 30 October to 2 November at Sun Carnival Plaza. Featuring nearly 200 booths showcasing local dishes, regional specialties, and OCOP products, the festival transformed the venue into a lively culinary playground. Interactive formats blending food tasting, folk art performances, and hands-on cooking experiences placed gastronomy at the heart of Quang Ninh’s cultural and entertainment calendar, energizing the autumn-winter tourism season. The event welcomed an estimated 30,000-50,000 visitors, particularly families and young travelers eager to explore, check in, dine, and shop.

Shortly afterward, the exhibition “Regional Specialties - Quang Ninh Autumn Colors 2025” (November 10-16) continued the journey with around 160 booths, offering visitors a deeper, more intimate connection to coastal and mining-region culture. These events delivered concise yet flavorful experiences, where taste intertwined naturally with cultural depth.

A year-round culinary panorama

Beyond flagship festivals, cuisine weaves through a wide array of events across the province, shaping a colorful, year-round tourism landscape. Seasonal OCOP fairs consistently attract large crowds, while agricultural and culinary celebrations, namely the Van Don Orange Festival and the Vietnam-China International Trade and Tourism Fair, add distinctive flavors that stimulate travel and shopping alike.

In key tourism hubs like Bai Chay, night-time spaces including pedestrian streets, night markets, and entertainment plazas create dynamic settings where dining, shopping, performances, and leisure converge. Fresh seafood from the coastal region, paired with a lively nocturnal atmosphere, has become a powerful draw for visitors seeking memorable evening experiences.

Cuisine as a driver of sustainable tourism

Tourism experts increasingly agree that cuisine is evolving from a supporting service into a primary driver of visitor flows. Today’s travelers “eat to experience, to explore, and to remember.” Quang Ninh stands out thanks to its rare, multi-layered culinary ecosystem, ranging from coastal and island seafood to mining-region flavors, mountainous ethnic cuisine, and borderland specialties, each with its own distinct “taste identity.”

Signature dishes such as Ha Long squid cake, fresh seafood from Van Don, Co To, and Quang Yen, alongside highland specialties like gat gu cake, five-color sticky rice, herbal wines, and ethnic minority dishes, create a rich and unforgettable gastronomic tapestry. OCOP products further extend these experiences, allowing visitors to bring home authentic flavors as meaningful travel mementos.

Quang Ninh’s advantage also lies in the diversity of its culinary settings, from cruises on the bay and coastal villages to mountainous communities and bustling border markets. Increasingly, food experiences go beyond dining to include cooking workshops, ingredient exploration, and cultural performances, especially when integrated with night tourism and festivals.

While the province has built a strong foundation for culinary tourism, many activities remain event-based. This highlights the need to move from an “event mindset” to a “product mindset,” developing curated culinary routes and thematic food tours.

When thoughtfully designed and woven into local narratives, cuisine can become a flagship tourism product, standing alongside heritage and culture to attract visitors sustainably and leave lasting emotional impressions.
