What makes the San Diu harvest prayer unique is not only its purpose of seeking bountiful rice crops, but also its profound philosophy of spiritual purification. Before the main ceremony, villagers carry out cleansing rites, ritual announcements, and offerings to the deities, guided by the belief that only when both people and sacred spaces are purified can blessings truly descend. This ritual therefore weaves together farming traditions with a rich spiritual worldview.

As community life stabilized and village bonds grew stronger over time, the spiritual aspirations of the San Diu people naturally expanded beyond prayers for good harvests alone. From the foundation of the harvest ritual emerged a more elaborate and inclusive ceremony, Dai Phan, integrating prayers for peace, protection, good health, and the expulsion of misfortune for both individuals and the entire community. Dai Phan thus represents an organic evolution of traditional beliefs, responding to the changing spiritual needs of the people.

Often referred to as the “Great meal ceremony” or the “Ritual of plenty,” Dai Phan embodies the timeless wish of agricultural communities for abundance, harmony, and prosperity. Celebrated in early spring or during agricultural off-seasons, the festival brings together the whole community in a vibrant spiritual gathering. Its rituals include the procession of the Son Thai Nhan effigy, sacrificial offerings, blade climbing, and fire walking, dramatic and symbolic acts that reflect the relationship between humans, nature, and the supernatural world.

Particularly captivating are the blade-climbing and fire-walking rites, which test physical endurance and spiritual faith. These acts symbolize the strength of belief and the human capacity to overcome illness, hardship, and adversity. Notably, the concept of purification in Dai Phan extends not only to ancestral spirits but also to the living, marking a significant development in traditional harvest beliefs. The festival thus becomes a ritual of renewal, opening the door to a healthier, more auspicious cycle of life for the entire community.

Despite its transformation into a large-scale spiritual festival, the essence of the harvest prayer remains at the heart of Dai Phan. The timing, purpose, and rituals continue to affirm the deep connection between people, crops, and deities, a relationship that lies at the core of San Diu cultural identity.

Dai Phan has been carefully preserved as a powerful symbol of San Diu heritage. More than a religious event, it is a vibrant space of community bonding, cultural transmission, and shared memory. Through these sacred rituals, the San Diu people continue to celebrate and safeguard a valuable intangible cultural heritage which offers visitors a rare and meaningful glimpse into the spiritual soul of northern Vietnam.
