At its third conference recently held in Hanoi, the 14th Party Central Committee approved in principle the establishment of Quang Ninh city.
Under the plan, Quang Ninh city will be established while retaining the province’s existing administrative boundaries. It will cover more than 6,231 sq.km, far exceeding the minimum requirement of 2,500 sq.km, and have a population of over 1.5 million.
Quang Ninh will develop under a green and smart urban model, integrating its urban, marine, island, border and heritage spaces into a unified ecosystem. Science, technology, innovation and digital transformation have been identified as new drivers of growth.
The locality will shift from a dispersed model to a multi-centred structure, strengthening connectivity and regional linkages. At its first extraordinary session scheduled for August, the 16th National Assembly is expected to consider and approve the proposal to establish Quang Ninh as a centrally governed city.
