From Quang Ninh’s first multi-organ retrieval from a brain-dead donor in 2024, doctors and medical staff at Vietnam–Sweden Uong Bi Hospital are now moving towards full mastery of kidney transplantation techniques.
Since the first kidney transplant in April 2025, in just over a year, Vietnam–Sweden Uong Bi Hospital has successfully performed eight kidney transplants, including five from living donors and three from brain-dead donors. Behind each transplant is not only major advances in professional expertise, but also valuable opportunities to prolong patients’ lives. Organ transplantation is one of the most complex techniques in modern medicine, requiring close coordination across an entire system, from intensive care, anaesthesia and surgery to laboratory testing and post-transplant monitoring. Performing organ transplants at the provincial level not only affirms the professional capacity of Quang Ninh’s healthcare sector, but also opens up new chances of survival for thousands of patients with organ failure within the province.
