Building on its natural conditions, local raw materials and cultural identity, Hoanh Mo commune is focusing on developing OCOP products in a more standardised and higher-quality direction, linked with the development of raw material areas and tourism. This is gradually adding value to local agricultural products, expanding markets and creating distinctive local products.
Hoanh Mo commune have worked with and guided two entities, namely Binh Lieu Flower Cooperative and Nghiep Doan Agricultural and Services Cooperative, in completing dossiers for four potential products. Binh Lieu Flower Cooperative has the giant pumpkin product, while Nghiep Doan Agricultural and Services Cooperative has three deer velvet products: honey-infused deer velvet, sliced deer velvet and deer velvet liquor. With proactive involvement from the locality, all four products were appraised and evaluated by the city-level OCOP Council and recognised by the Quang Ninh City People’s Committee as three-star OCOP products under Decision No. 3166/QD-UBND dated August 26, 2026.
The commune continues to provide information, encourage participation and support producers in completing dossiers for the second round of OCOP evaluation and classification in 2026. Around three to five potential and key local products are expected to be selected, including sturgeon and Khe Tien catfish from Hoanh Mo; Hoanh Mo Tiu Khin liquor; Hoanh Mo star anise forest honey; community-based tourism products; and Song Mooc bottled water. These products each have their own advantages and are closely associated with the locality’s natural conditions, livelihoods and local resources.
Beyond its existing products, in the 2027-2030 period Hoanh Mo commune will continue to orient the development of other product groups with local strengths, including star anise, cinnamon, Cao Son chicken, black Muscovy duck, wild boar hybrids, and clean vegetables and fruits. These products have both the potential to be developed into commercial goods and compatibility with the locality’s orientation towards green and safe agricultural production adapted to highland conditions.
Notably, the commune is also orienting the development of products linked with tourism, including cherry blossoms. As this flower is suited to the highland climate and landscape, Hoanh Mo is working towards gradually making cherry blossoms a distinctive local image, linking the product with experiential spaces, community-based tourism and promotion of the border area. In this way, each OCOP product can become not only an agricultural commodity but also an “ambassador” introducing the land and people of Hoanh Mo to visitors.
