Frost blankets high mountain peaks in northern Vietnam

For the first time during this winter (2024–2025), frost has appeared across several high mountain peaks, including Phia Oac (Cao Bang), Lao Than (Lao Cai), and Ta Xua (Yen Bai).

On Saturday afternoon, Ta Xua peak, standing 2,865 meters tall in Ban Cong Commune, Tram Tau District, Yen Bai Province, is covered in white frost.

The frost first appears on the tallest treetops before gradually spreading downward, blanketing an area of approximately 500 meters.

Frost on Ta Xua peak. Saturday marked the first day of strong cold front impacting the entire northern region. The lowest temperature of 3 degree Celsius was recorded at Mau Son peak (Lang Son), while Sa Pa (Lao Cai), Pha Din (Dien Bien), and Dong Van (Ha Giang) experienced temperatures around 5 degree Celsius.

On the top of Lao Than mountain at an altitude of 2,860 meters located in Y Ty Commune of Bat Xat District in Lao Cai, frost began to appear around 2 p.m. Water droplets freeze on tree branches from an altitude of 2,500 meters all the way to the mountain's summit.

Authorities in Y Ty Commune said that villages had been instructed to proactively keep the elderly and children warm. Residents are also advised to cover barns and stockpile food for their livestock and poultry.

A thin layer of frost also appears at Phia Oac peak in Nguyen Binh District, Cao Bang Province, at an altitude of nearly 2,000 meters.

Frost clings to the walls at Phia Oac peak. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that the peak of this cold spell occurred Sunday morning and night. Temperatures in the highlands are expected to drop below 3°C in some areas, while mountainous regions will experience 6-9°C, and plains and midlands will range from 12-14°C, with some places dipping below 12°C. The meteorological agency also stated that with temperatures reaching freezing levels, frost is likely to form on many high mountain peaks.
