Making English a second language in schools is becoming one of the key tasks of the education sector. In Quang Ninh, schools are adopting flexible and practical approaches to create an environment in which students can learn and use English effectively.
In the 2026-2027 school year, the Educational Practice School under Ha Long University has 30 classes with 1,254 students across all three levels of education. The school has identified building its foreign language teaching and learning brand as one of its key tasks, with an initial focus on English and Chinese.
Alongside the regular curriculum, the school places emphasis on second-session programmes, club activities and support programmes for students seeking advanced study. Students also have opportunities to attend international summer camps in China and to visit the South Korean Embassy to learn about culture and diplomatic activities.
Tran Hung Dao Primary School in Hong Gai ward is also a notable example in foreign language teaching and learning. Since November 2025, the school has offered one English-medium mathematics practice lesson per class each week at Campus 1, before expanding the programme to Campus 2 in the second semester.
At the end of the previous school year, 1,076 out of 1,394 students achieved a good level of completion in English. All Grade 5 students met the required learning outcomes. The school’s students won five prizes at the Let’s Shine competition and 23 national-level IOE prizes.
In June 2026, the Quang Ninh City People’s Committee issued a plan to implement the foreign language projects “Making English a Second Language in Schools” and “Strengthening Foreign Language Teaching and Learning” for the 2026-2030 period across the city.
In implementing the projects, the Department of Education and Training quickly organised an English proficiency survey for general education teachers in June 2026. The survey results were used as a basis for assessing the current English proficiency of general education teachers, identifying training needs and building a database to support the development of a teaching workforce capable of teaching subjects or organising educational activities in English in the coming period.
The coordinated and effective implementation of the “Making English a Second Language in Schools” project and the “Strengthening Foreign Language Teaching and Learning” project for the 2026-2030 period is expected to contribute to improving learners’ foreign language proficiency. This, in turn, will help improve the quality of human resources and enhance the competitiveness of Quang Ninh’s workforce in domestic and international labour markets.
