Van Don District’s people are preparing for the main harvest of turgid venus. In order to ensure the productivity and the quality, cultivators follow specific principles during the process of harvesting.
There are more than 1,000 households in Van Don District raising mollusk. More than half of them cultivate turgid venus with annual productivity of 12,00 tons. Local people in the district harvest turgid venus all year around, depending on the time of releasing breeds and market consumption capacity. However, the most suitable time for collecting turgid venus falls in the end of September when it is cool as autumn comes, thus ensuring the best quality during transporting them to distributors.
Collecting turgid venus seems to be easy. Locals hire divers to pick up cages under water, remove mud and sand on the claims, then put them into plastic or stainless buckets full of seawater to avoid heat and ensure the quality of the aquatic product.
Mr. Nguyen Van Sa, living Group 1, Zone 4, Cai Rong Town, one of the famous traders in Van Don, said “ My family transacts 1-3 tons of turgid venus everday. The process of storing the claims is ensured. On hot days, turgid venus are immersed in seawater then put into styrofoam boxes with a lot of ice cubes as a bottom layer to ensure the temperature of around 22 degree C. In winter, turgid venus just need seawater in styrofoam boxes.
In May 2020, turgid venus was among Vietnam’s aquatic products added to China’s import list, which provides opportunity for cultivators to boost their production for export and earn great income. It is expected that when Covid-19 is controlled and import and export markets are expanded, the volume of turgid venus export to China will rocket.
