Quang Ninh General Hospital and Bai Chay Hospital hosted a delegation of Spanish medical experts and representatives from Vietnam's National Organ Transplant Coordination Center on October 22 to expand international cooperation in organ donation and transplantation.
The Spanish medical experts shared their experience in organizing hospital-based organ donation programs, including procedures for identifying potential donors and coordinating donation activities.
Discussions focused on the roles of transplant coordinators, intensive care doctors and nurses in identifying potential donors, coordinating medical procedures and counseling patients' families to help them make informed decisions about organ donation.
The meetings also addressed ways to improve coordination among medical departments, expand professional training and develop organ donation and transplantation networks.
The exchanges are expected to create new opportunities for Quang Ninh hospitals to build international partnerships, share medical expertise and improve their capacity to manage organ donation and transplantation programs.
Quang Ninh has made progress in organ donation and transplantation in recent years.
Since 2025, Quang Ninh General Hospital has coordinated three multiorgan donations, with five kidneys and two corneas successfully transplanted at the hospital.
Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital has also facilitated organ donations from two donors, resulting in two kidney and two cornea transplants for four patients.
In 2026, Bai Chay Hospital coordinated a multiorgan donation and organ retrieval from a brain-dead donor.
These developments reflect improving coordination among medical teams and the gradual expansion of organ and tissue donation and transplantation services in Quang Ninh.
