Biodiversity conservation: A foundation for sustainable development

In recent years, Quang Ninh has consistently attached importance to biodiversity conservation, regarding biodiversity as an ecological safeguard for sustainable development by implementing a range of coordinated measures while raising community awareness and responsibility for environmental protection.

In recent years, Quang Ninh has gradually incorporated biodiversity conservation into its planning, plans and management. Nature conservation, biodiversity and wetland management have been integrated into the Quang Ninh City Master Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050, and further specified through plans to implement the National Biodiversity Strategy, the Wetland Action Plan, environmental protection programmes, climate change response and green growth initiatives. The city has also paid attention to surveys, statistics, inventories and database development, creating an initial foundation for evidence-based biodiversity management.

Over roughly the past decade, Quang Ninh has focused on implementing tasks related to the Co To - Tran Island, Ha Long Bay and Bai Tu Long marine conservation areas; researching and proposing the establishment of a wetland conservation area and working towards Ramsar site status for the Dong Rui mangrove forest in Hai Lang commune; while also establishing areas to protect peanut worm and mud clam resources and aquatic spawning grounds.

Notably, in May 2026, the Co To - Tran Island Marine Protected Area was established to protect marine ecosystems, restore and develop aquatic resources, and contribute to sustainable marine economic development, in line with the national biodiversity conservation master plan and the Quang Ninh master plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

A greener Ha Long Bay, a more pristine Bai Tu Long, a more sustainable Yen Tu, a more intelligently managed Dong Rui, and better-restored mangrove forests are not only conservation outcomes, but also part of Quang Ninh’s green competitiveness, ecological security and sustainable development.
