Van Don International Airport to operate on Dec. 25

On Oct. 5, the Provincial People’s Committee of Quang Ninh has issued the Document No 7335/UBND-XD1 to submit to the Ministry of Transport to deal with the procedures to operate the Van Don International Airport as planned.

Van Don International Aiport welcomed the first aircraft on July 11, and was evaluated to ensure hi-quality and technology to become operational in late December.
As planned, Van Don International Airport will go in to use by December 25, 2018.

Accordingly, QNPPC proposed the Transport Ministry to direct the Viet Nam Air Traffic Management Corporation to hand over properties and operate the airport in the incipient time; complete all the lagal procedures as in regualtions so that the airport would go in to use by December 25, 2018.

To date, the construction of the airport has been basically completed for the acceptance of construction work by the State Council on October 30.

Earlier, the aiport welcomed the first aircraft on July 11, and was evaluated to ensure hi-quality and technology to become operational in late December.

Van Don International airport, the first in Vietnam invested in by a private sector - the Sun Group – under the BOT investment form, started in March 2016 in Doan Ket commune of Van Don district, with a total investment of 7. 4627 billion VND.

Under Decision No.497/QD-BGTVT on March 15, 2018 by the Ministry of Transport, Van Don will be an international airport, serving both civil and military flights with a 3.6km long runway.

The airport is expected to be operational this December, with nine air routes and capable of serving around 7,000 passengers per day.

The airport will have an annual capacity of 2-2.5 million passengers by 2020, which will increase to 5 million by 2030.

Set to cover more than 326ha by 2020, the airport is comprised of support facilities, a two-module terminal, and other functional areas. A cargo terminal is expected to be built by 2030 with a capacity of at least 51,000 tonnes.

The establishment of Van Don airport is hoped to facilitate travel to Quang Ninh, home to the World Heritage site of Ha Long Bay.
