The Ministry of Transport and the Quang Ninh PPC on April 6 jointly held the ceremony to announce the official plan of QuangNinh International Airport until 2020, with a vision to 2030.
Prominent among those at the ceremony were the Minister of Transport Dinh La Thang, the Secretary of Quang Ninh Party Committee Pham Minh Chinh, the Chairman of Quang Ninh PPC Nguyen Van Doc.
The Deputy Director of the Vietnam Aviation Department Luu Thanh Binh announced the Decision No. 576/QD-BGTVT dated March 16 2012 by the Ministry of Transport on approving the plan of Quang Ninh International Airport until 2020 with a vision to 2030.
The airport, to span 285ha in Doan Ket Commune, Van Don district will have runways 3,000m x 45m in size to allow the operation of long-range and wide-body Boeing 777s. The total investment capital is over VND5.1 trillion ($242 million).
The project will be carried out in two phases. The first stage which costs VND3.5 trillion ($160 million), nearly two-thirds of the total investment will be undertaken between now and 2020. The Prime Minister has approved to undertake the project under a BOT (build-operate-transfer) model.
According to the plan, the airport will have at least four aprons and be able to handle 2 million passengers and 10,000 tons of goods per annum by 2020 and it will be expanded to have seven aprons, with the capacity to handle 5 million passengers and 30,000 tons per year by 2030.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Secretary Pham Minh Chinh expect the airport will help spur socio-economic growth in the province - a key economic hub in the northern region and home to World Heritage Ha Long Bay as well as many other landscapes./.
