The Ministry of Transport has recently approved detail plan for 4 marine port groups to 2020 and in the orientation of 2030, including: concentrating resources on developing the Hai Phong international gateway port; planning for the combined Central and Northern seaport group to attract marine transport demand from Laos; developing Van Phong- Khanh Hoa port as an international transshipment port; and developing a detail plan for the Southeastern seaport group.
Among these above-mentioned plans, the detail plan for the Northern seaport groups aims to freight cargo from 146 to 176 million tons per year by 2020.
Specific objectives of the recently adopted plan are: to focus resources on completing the development of Hai Phong international gateway seaport in Lach Huyen area in order to receive vessels with capacity of up to 100 DWT; to create the exit gate for Vietnamese export and import goods; and to partly attract goods from international and regional transshipment.
In addition, it also focuses on the following plans: developing Hai Phong as a national general port and the international gateway; Hon Gai will become general national port and regional hub; Cam Pha and Hai Ha will be specialized ports. Two local general ports are Van Gia and Mui Chua (Van Hoa).
