February CPI rises 0.55 percent

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in February soared 0.55 percent from the previous month, reported the General Statistics Office (GSO) on February 24.

According to GSO, the highest CPI rise of this month was of the restaurant and food services group at 1.15 percent, of which food away from home contributed 1.6 percent, while foodstuff and food had price hikes of 1.16 percent and 0.68 percent.

Post-telecommunication and housing and building material enjoyed a CPI reduction of 0.02 percent and 0.64 percent, respectively.

Other commodity groups saw CPI rise of less than 1 percent, such as beverage and cigarette (0.6 percent); garments, hats and footwear (0.21 percent); equipment and household devices (0.22 percent); and medicine and health service (0.05 percent).

In spite of increasing travel demand during the Tet (Lunar New Year) holiday, CPI of transport group only rose 0.66 percent and culture, amusement and tourism group increased 0.61 percent. Education group saw slight price rise of 0.01 percent, while other groups witnessed CPI increase of 0.55 percent.

GSO reported that the gold price in the second month of the year surged 1.87 percent over a month earlier, but dropped 22.77 percent from a year earlier. The US dollar price decreased 0.03 percent and 1.05 percent, respectively.
