On Feb. 17, the Government issued the Decision No. 226 / QD-TTg approving the adjustment of the general construction planning of Van Don Economic Zone (EZ) till 2040.
According to the decision, the planning scope will cover an area of over 2,171sq.km, including the whole area of Van Don district. Of which, the natural area is 581.83km2 and the sea area is 1,589.5km2.
According to the planning, Van Don will be developed to become a multi-sector marine economic zone and a center of entertainment with casino and high-class sea-island tourism with diversified services; a gateway for international trade, creating unique modern and high-quality products with international brands and competitiveness. Van Don is defined as a green, modern, smart, sustainable sea-island city and an area with a stable location in terms of national security and defense.
The total population is expected to reach around 140,000 – 200,000 by 2030 and 300,000-500,000 by 2040.
The spatial development structure of Van Don EZ is divided into two regions, including Cai Bau island and Van Hai archipelago, with orientation of five development belts, including: a high-class ecological resort belt; Ecotourism belt in combination with protection of natural heritage; Belt for urban services, culture and entertainment (eastern area of Cai Bau island); High-tech service, commercial and industrial belt and logistics service area (the western area of Cai Bau island); and the reserve belt for development and expansion in the West (in the boundary of Cam Pha city and Tien Yen district).
The Prime Minister assigned Quang Ninh Provincial People's Committee to coordinate with the Ministry of Construction to review the planning adjustment while setting up mechanisms and financial resources, human resources to implement technical infrastructure projects to create motivation for socio-economic development of Quang Ninh.
