White frost covers Dong pagoda at the peak of Yen Tu Mountain
A layer of frost blanketed Yen Tu mountain in Uong Bi city as temperatures plunged below 0 degrees Celsius this morning.
Dong Pagoda is the tallest peack of Yen Tu Mountain, 1,068m above sea level. Frost started to formed at midnight and a frost layer is seen covering tree branches and fences.
The National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting reported that the cold spell will last until Jan. 25, with the lowest temperature in the Northern Delta being 7-10 degrees Celius and sub-zero in high mountains.
Dong (Bronze) Pagoda was built on the spot where King Tran Nhan Tong, eldest son of King Tran Thanh Tong, led his monastic life. The pagoda was built in the Post-Le Dynasty (15th century) by a concubine of a Trinh Lord. It has an iron frame and a bronze roof and is small in scale like a shrine. The Buddha statue, bell, and musical stone in the pagoda are all made of bronze.
The pagoda was recognised as “a bronze pagoda on the highest mountain in Asia” by the Asian Record Organisation.
