On the last days of August, at Doan Thi Diem Elementary School (Cao Xanh Ward, Ha Long City), teachers instructed their pupils on how to wrap books and textbooks with wrapping papers during their breaks, instead of nilon wrapping sheets in previous school years. 4-grade pupil Dinh Trung Hieu said excitedly “My mother also wraps my books with papers. She said that paper was degradable in a short time while nilon was not degradable”. Besides their main job of learning, pupils there also practice classifying organic waste and inorganic waste as well as putting trash in right places. Besides, they collect trash in their school every Friday.

At Hoa Lan Kindergarten (Hong Hai Ward, Ha Long City), plastic bottles, newspapers, dried-up ballpoint pens, milk carton packs…are collected and use as recycled materials to make toys for children and decorate classrooms. The environmentally-friendly, recycled, and hand made products show off teachers and children’s creativity and meticulosity.

It is a good news that many schools in Ha Long in particular and Quang Ninh in general have carried out specific programs to implement “Anti plastic waste” campaign. Vice-Director of Quang Ninh’s Department of Education and Training, Nguyen Thi Thuy, said that schools in the province would enhance and diversify propaganda activities on the risks of plastic and nilon pollution in order to perform the campaign effectively.

It can be seen that local people’s awareness on limiting the use of plastic products among pupils, pupils’ parents, educational staff, and teachers has been improved significantly. However, it needs practicing everyday to become each individual’s habit. Therefore it can be expanded in the community, not just a campaign.
