Over 7,500 people relocated from aquaculture zones to safe places ahead of storm
As of 9 am on July 21, Quang Ninh province had successfully relocated 7,518 people from aquaculture zones to safe inland areas, with efforts ongoing to complete the evacuation.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, as of 10 am on the same day, the eye of Typhoon Wipha was located at approximately 21.2°N latitude and 109.6°E longitude, about 190 kilometers east of Quang Ninh. The storm was packing winds of level 9, with gusts reaching level 11, and moving west-southwest at speeds of 15-20 km/h.
The Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue, and Civil Defense reported that Quang Ninh is home to 7,708 aquaculture facilities, including 800 offshore sites. All have been informed of the storm and instructed to implement appropriate safety measures. The evacuation of residents, prioritizing women, the elderly, and children, began on the afternoon of July 19.
By 9am on July 21, 7,518 people had been brought safely ashore, with the remaining efforts expected to conclude by midday.
In addition, the province has identified 2,078 houses at high risk of flooding, landslides, or structural damage due to the approaching storm.
Local governments have already notified residents and prepared evacuation plans. On July 20, Hong Gai ward relocated 25 households from the deteriorating five-story Bach Long apartment building and 35 households from blocks A and C of the hospital staff housing, both classified as level-D high-risk buildings. Ha Lam ward is expected to complete the relocation of 52 households living in hazardous areas before 2pm on July 21.
On July 20, local authorities also facilitated the safe return of approximately 14,000 tourists from offshore destinations to the mainland. By 5pm, only 47 tourists remained on the islands of Co To and Van Don Special Administrative Zones, having opted to stay.
Local tourism operators have been instructed to ensure these visitors' safety and comfort during their stay.
