Fish-shaped trash bins impress visitors to Cai Chien Island

If single-use plastic is all replaced on Ha Long Bay and recycled products are used on Co To island, there is a unique way to collect trash on Cai Chien Island – fish-shaped trash bins on the seashore.

The fish-shaped trash bins with a board written “Give me trash” installed on Cai Chien Ferry Station area and Cai Chien Beach have been put into use for several months. The mesh trash bins, in the shape of a fish, 5m long, 2m tall, can accommodate 4-5 tons of plastic bottles. They not only make a strong impression at first sight but also carry the message of environmental protection which encourages tourists and local people to put rubbish at the right places.

There are now 6 such models on Cai Chien Island. Since the appearance of the fish, islanders and visitors have been more active in keeping the environment clean and green and classifying garbage. Local authority also limits the use of plastic products, for example using glass bottles at meetings, replacing plastic straws with paper straws, using recycled paper bags, and encourages hotels to invest in similar fish-shaped bins in line with their real situation.
