Developing fishery into a spearhead economic sector

After five years of implementing of the Resolution13-NQ/TU dated May 6th 2014 issued by Quang Ninh Provincial Party’s Committee on aquaculture development, provincial fishery sector has witnessed strong growth.

Accordingly, the value of aquaculture production in 2018 reached over 10,7 trillion VND, accounting for 53% of total value in agro-forestry-fishery sector. Total aquatic output was over 124.300 tons, up 4.3% over the set target for 2019. This year’s value of aquaculture production is estimated at more than 12 trillion VND and aquatic output is forecasted to be 128.000 tons. In terms of structure, aquatic farming accounts for nearly 50%. Offshore fishing is enhanced while coastal fishing is reduced.

Quang Ninh’s aquaculture development plan to 2025 with an orientation to 2030 sets focal targets, such as developing fishery sector ensuring climate change adaptation, increasing added values, shifting from traditional farming to IT-applied farming on commercial scale to improve the productivity and quality.

Quang Ninh plans to increase the area for aquaculture cultivation to 24,000 ha and the output to 84,000 tons by 2025; to 26,500 ha and 108,000 tons respectively by 2030. Besides, the province sets the target of creating 90,000 additional jobs in 2030. It will also release 2-3 million breeds to reproduce natural aquatic resource, and recover 1-2% of typical eco-system area including coral reef, seaweed bed, mangrove forests…

It is expected that more than 40 programs and projects will be carried out from now to 2025.
