In the first months of 2020, due to the influence of Covid-19 pandemic, the number of vessels to Quang Ninh significantly declined. However, the volume of commodity via Quang Ninh’s seaport systems increased by 15% against the same period last year. This proves a new trend for transportation by sea and Quang Ninh’s effective way in preventing and controlling the pandemic while ensuring socio-economic development at the same time.
Since the beginning of 2020, Covid-19 outbreak has greatly impacted on various fields, including sea transport. Quang Ninh’s passenger ports have limited the reception of ships in fear of Covid-19 spread. In Jan, the province received 32 ship arrivals bringing more than 29,000 passenger arrivals. But Feb witnessed no ship arrival.
As for freight transport, Quang Ninh’s authority and Marine-time Administration of Quang Ninh have implemented measures against Covid-19 disease while enhancing advertisement. However, the number of cargo ships has significantly decreased. In the first two month of the year, the province welcomed more than 1,700 ship arrivals meanwhile the figure in the same period of last year was 2,074 ship arrivals. Nevertheless, the cargo volume recorded an increase of 15% to 13 million tons from 11 million tons in the same period of last year.
To prevent the disease, Marine-time Administration of Quang Ninh has worked with relevant units to set up quarantine checkpoints right at the waterfront, asking the representative for the ship to provide a detailed statement about the 10 latest ports that the ship had docked at; the time at sea since it left the disease-hit port for Quang Ninh; crew and passengers’ health information…
Thanks to specific and flexible solutions, seaport system in Quang Ninh is now in normal operation, thus contributing to the overall economic growth in the province.
Quang Ninh has six seaport system clusters. Quang Ninh's sea route handles 40.5% of the total cargo volume via seaports in the North.
