The Chinese tourist market has long been one of Quang Ninh City’s important sources of international visitors. Since the beginning of October, the number of passengers entering and leaving Vietnam through Mong Cai International Border Gate has risen sharply, providing a positive signal for international visitor growth while creating further opportunities for the city to improve product quality, extend stays and increase tourist spending.
During China’s seven-day National Day holiday from October 1-7, passenger flows through Mong Cai International Border Gate remained high. More than 25,200 entries and exits were recorded during the holiday, while international tourist arrivals reached around 4,000 per day at peak times.
Notably, instead of mainly sightseeing and shopping in Mong Cai before returning the same day as in the past, an increasing number of tour groups are choosing three- to four-day itineraries linking Mong Cai with Ha Long. These itineraries have been expanded to include resort stays, heritage visits, culinary experiences and high-quality tourism services.
Since the beginning of the year, more than 880,000 passengers have completed entry and exit procedures through Mong Cai International Border Gate. Along with the increase in numbers, the needs of this visitor segment are also changing markedly. Travel businesses are designing tour programmes to extend stays, diversify experiences and improve service quality.
Alongside short tours, high-quality five-day, four-night and six-day, five-night programmes from Mong Cai connecting Cam Pha, Quang Hanh and Van Don are attracting growing interest. Golf, cruises, hot mineral spring resorts and art performances are suitable for MICE groups and high-spending visitors. The trend of combining the Ha Long - Yen Tu heritage destinations is also expanding, adding cultural and spiritual elements to itineraries and meeting the diverse experience needs of Chinese visitors.
As one of the key localities participating in the “Vietnam - China Tourism Cooperation Year 2026-2027”, Quang Ninh is stepping up tourism promotion, expanding visitor markets and strengthening cultural and tourism exchanges with Chinese localities. According to the tourism sector, China continues to be identified as one of Quang Ninh’s key international markets, given its large scale, strong recovery capacity and important role in the city’s international visitor growth.
To effectively tap the market, Quang Ninh continues to renew its tourism promotion and marketing activities in a more professional manner and tailor them to different visitor segments. The city is increasing its participation in international tourism fairs and forums in China, organising networking programmes for travel businesses from both sides, and hosting famtrip and presstrip delegations to survey tourism products and services.
At the same time, Quang Ninh is expanding cooperation with Chinese localities in cross-border tourism development, maintaining cultural exchanges and trade promotion activities, and strengthening tour and route linkages between Quang Ninh and Guangxi as well as other Chinese localities.
