Nicknamed as a pearl, Ngoc Vung Island on Bai Tu Long Bay is famous for its untouched and romantic beauty. But few people know that there are a number of amazing freshwater lakes on the island.
Traveling to Ngoc Vung Island on early days of autumn, tourists can feel the cool weather. Apart from Truong Chinh white sandy beach, Uncle Ho’s Monument House, National Flag Tower… tourists can visit the largest freshwater lakes on the island, for example Ngoc Thuy Lake, Cau Lau Lake…
From the center of the island commune, going along the main road, tourists will head to Binh Minh Hamlet, one of the most beautiful areas on the island. From the welcoming gate at the entrance to the hamlet, tourists go straight to Ngoc Vung Communal House and Ngoc Thuy Lake is right next to the communal house. Legend says that the lake existed from long time ago and associated with stories about relics and shrines on the island. This is a natural lake, covering an area of thousands of hectare. Always full of crystal emerald green water, the lake provides a source of irrigation water for the whole island commune.
Keep going for one km from Ngoc Thuy Lake, tourists arrive to Cau Lau Lake which covers an area of 9.1 ha. It is always full of water even in dry season. The lake has a beautiful surrounding landscape with a diverse flora and fauna system. The construction of the lake started in 2003 and completed in 2012. It provides running water for 200 households and support irrigation work for over 26ha of rice fields in Ngoc Vung island commune.
In the future, these lakes are a valuable natural resource for eco-tourism development, attracting more tourists to the pearl island. At the moment, tourists may take electric-car tours to the 2 lakes.
