A 3-day traditional festival is underway in Quang Yen Town, Quang Ninh province, to remember with rituals the merits of predecessors and affirms the historical value of the Bach Dang victories in Vietnam’s fight against foreign invaders.

Major events include the procession of the statue of 13th century General Tran Hung Dao, the Yen Giang communal house ritual, folk games, and other exciting cultural and sports activities.

Tran Duc Thang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Yen town, said: Last year, Quang Yen town included the Bach Dang national relic area in the dossier of the Yen Tu-Vinh Nghiem-Con Son and Kiep Bac relic and landscape complex submitted to UNESCO for recognition as a world heritage site. Quang Yen is currently inviting investment in Phase II of the project to preserve the Bach Dang Victory Special National Relic Area.”

The Bach Dang River witnessed three great victories in Vietnam’s history of national construction and defense. In 938, Ngo Quyen defeated the Southern Han forces in a battle that ended more than 1,000 years of Chinese rule and regained independence for Vietnam. In 981, Le Hoan won against the Song army, and in 1288 Tran Hung Dao beat the powerful Mongols.
