The Yen Tu Ultra Trail 2025 kicked off on September 6 at the Yen Tu Special National Relic Site, part of a complex recently inscribed by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site.

Right after the opening ceremony, delegates and athletes set off on the 5km course, exploring the heritage landscape of Yen Tu.

Under the theme “Exploring heritage, spreading essence”, the event is organized by Yen Tu ward in cooperation with the Quang Ninh Journalists’ Association, the Management Board of Relics and Scenic Sites, VietNamNet, Tung Lam Development JSC, and operated by Great Race Vietnam.

The race drew 1,068 runners from Vietnam and abroad, including participants from India, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, the UK and the US.

As the first-ever trail running event held at Yen Tu, the competition distinguishes itself with diverse and demanding courses set against a backdrop of sacred mountains and ancient temples. The routes blend challenging climbs with more accessible stretches, offering runners both physical tests and cultural immersion.

Runners competing in the 50km distance set off from the Yen Tu Ward People’s Committee gate at 4 am.

Shorter distances of 5km and 15km take runners through villages, streams and historic sites such as Mot Mai Pagoda, Hoa Yen Pagoda, Hue Quang Tower and Giai Oan Pagoda.

Longer courses of 25km and 50km extend deep into Yen Tu National Forest, passing Yen Trung Lake, Thanh Dang Peak, and the Khe Soong - Bac Waterfall, showcasing the dramatic natural beauty intertwined with the spiritual heritage of King Tran Nhan Tong’s Buddhist legacy.

Beyond a sporting event, the Ultra Trail is designed to spotlight Yen Tu’s unique landscape and culture, stimulate autumn-winter tourism in Quang Ninh, and position the province as a new destination for sports tourism.
