Vietnam aims for growth of 6.5-7% during 2016-2020

Vietnam seeks to achieve average annual growth of between 6.5% and 7% during the 2016-2020 period, according to Prime Minister, Nguyen Tan Dung’s directive on the formulation of the next five-year socio-economic development plan.

He said the general objectives of the 2016-2020 plan were maintaining macroeconomic stability, curbing inflation and promoting high economic growth as the foundations for Vietnam to become a modernised and industrialised country in 2020.

During the period, Vietnam will push through the implementation of three major tasks, namely perfecting the market mechanism, developing high-quality human resources and building a modern infrastructure system.

The Prime Minister said Vietnam would continue to improve the business environment and create favourable conditions for the development of all economic sectors, particularly the private sector, foreign-invested firms and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Encouraging the development of science and technology, developing a diversified social security system, reducing poverty in a sustainable manner and protecting the environment were also key tasks during the five years to 2020.

PM Dung requested that the 2016-2020 development plans should be in keeping with resolutions adopted by the Party, National Assembly and Government and that its objectives and solutions must be feasible.

He noted that the formulation of the plan should take into consideration opinions of think tanks, social organisations, trade associations and residential communities, as well as international development partners and domestic and foreign experts.
