New miners’ “banh mi” (bread) is not only crunchy and delicious but also has a new color and typical taste that win food lovers’ hearts.
A new kind of “banh mi” has been attracting customers in Ha Long with its catchy name “black banh mi” under the trademark of “banhmimo” (or miners’ “banh mi”). After the success of dragon-fruit “banh mi”, “black banh mi” (or “dark night banh mi” for fun) has raised many people’s curiosity.
Talking about his idea on the special “banh mi”, Nguyen Van Quyet, co-founder of Bamymo Joint-stock Company in Bai Chay Ward, Ha Long City, and an experienced cook, said “ Vietnam’s “banh mi” has been well known for the most rustic delicious food in the world. In Quang Ninh, miners’ “banh mi” has been an integral part of local people for generations. The idea of iconic “banh mi” was born in that way”.
It is not easy to create unique flavor and color for black “banh mi”. After some researches, Mr. Quyet decided to use squid ink which is then processed, frozen, grinded and mixed with bamboo charcoal crystal which is a safe and food additive for health. The mixture offers a shiny black color. However, it took him 6 months, until June 2019, to have the right color.
The dumpling of “black banh mi” is another plus point and highly appreciated by food lovers because it is made from different kinds of seafood available in Quang Ninh, including shrimp, crab, squid paste… They are mixed with a special sauce.
Enjoying crunchy and sea-flavored “banh mi” is a must-try experience for near-and-far tourists.
