Improving the added value of locally-made Pacific oyster

Pacific oyster has recently been seen as one of the high-quality products in Quang Ninh and a range of products made from this kind of seafood have been promoted in order to be exported in the near future.

Pacific oyster was imported from Taiwan and first raised in 2007 at the island of Cong Tay and then Cong Nua island at Ban Sen commune in Van Don district by Halong Production-Development and Investment Company (under BIM Group). This farming received much technical support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development through its quality supervising program and the project of safety criteria and quality of farming area.

As reported by the Agriculture Division of Van Don district, in the period of 2016-2018, the total area of mollusc aquaculture was 2,310 hectares and the output was 13,220 tons, of which oyster accounts for 50 percent.

Fishery economy is defined as a key to the economic development of Van Don district until 2020 with a vision till 2030. Thus, the district has offered businesses support and incentives on promoting food processing, product diversification and export.

Halong Production-Development and Investment Company has pioneered in enhancing the added value of Pacific oyster by developing food processing chains. With an area of more than 300 hectare of waterface, the company has an average output of 1,000 tons of commercial oyster per year. In 2013, the first peeled and wrapped oyster product was introduced and sold in big supermarkets namely BigC, Metro and A-one nationwide with the price at about VND 180 thousand (or US$ 9).

Food-lovers can also find it truly tasty when enjoying other products such as oyster, springroll, oyster cooked with the brine in soil pots, breaded oyster, etc.

In addition, Quang Ninh Fishery and Commerce Company located in Van Don has currently invested in modern technological chains to produce various processed food from oyster such as springroll, salted shredded oyster, biscuits, oyster essence, etc.

Most of the items are praised by consumers and ranked 3-5 stars in the list of products under the provincial One Commune One Product program (OCOP), which means that they satisfy needed criteria for export.
