Having good experience in developing forest economy, after carefully researching values of golden camellia trees which is adapted to local soil conditions, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Anh’s family at Ba Xa hamlet, An Sinh Commune, Dong Trieu Town, has bravely invested in planting 5 ha of golden camellia trees. This is one of the new economic development models in An Sinh Commune in particular and in Dong Trieu Town in general.
Golden Camellia is a naturally occurring plant which is suitable to the conditions of soil, climate and water sources in mountainous areas of An Sinh Commune and some other localities inside and outside Dong Trieu Town.
The golden camellia trees have good resistance and closely bloomed flowers. However, the number of golden camellia varieties is decreasing due to the over-exploitation. To expand and preserve these plants, in 2016, Mrs Nguyen Thi Anh transferred 5 ha of fruit tree cultivation into the golden camellia ones.
The golden camellia trees are plants which require a high level of care and planting techniques. They will be harvested after 5 years.
To expand the golden camellia cultivation area, Mrs Nguyen Thi Anh’s family follows the motto “achieving long-term goals by taking short-term goals”, specifically intercropping short-term crop plants, fruit trees and making breeding to get income, thereby serving the long-term development of the golden camellia trees.
Mrs Anh has actively cooperated with 6 households in An Sinh commune to establish Huyen Anh Golden Camellia Tea Eco-agriculture Cooperative in order to germinate and multiply the golden camellia trees.
After 3 years of planting, from 5 ha of cultivation area with 15,000 golden camellia trees, Mrs Nguyen Thi Anh’s family harvested about 1 ton of dried leaves and 10 kg of dried flowers. With the current price at 600,000 VND/kg of dried leaves and over 20 mil VND/kg of dried flowers, this economic model creates jobs with stable income for local laborers.
