Earth Hour 2025: Green transition - Green future

Vietnam actively participates in the Earth Hour 2025 campaign, scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2025, from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM local time. This global initiative encourages individuals, communities, and businesses to turn off non-essential electric lights for one hour to save energy and protect the environment.

Quang Ninh Power Company workers give customers an instruction on energy-saving solutions.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the energy sector currently accounts for approximately 70% of total greenhouse gas emissions. This proportion could rise to 80% by 2030 under a business-as-usual scenario. If localities and businesses do not take decisive action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Vietnam will struggle to achieve its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050, as committed by the Prime Minister at the COP26 conference.

Among the solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector, in addition to developing renewable energy sources, efficient and economical energy use is considered crucial in contributing to a greener environment and future. Electricity conservation has become increasingly urgent, especially in the context that Vietnam aims to maintain double-digit economic growth from 2026 to 2030, which requires energy consumption to grow 1.5 times, with an estimated increase of 12-16%.

With the goal of raising public awareness about efficient electricity use and environmental protection, Quang Ninh province has consistently promoted energy-saving solutions throughout 15 years of participating in the Earth Hour campaign. These efforts include replacing lighting systems with LED lights, installing soft-start inverters, utilizing waste heat, and using high-energy-efficiency equipment.

Additionally, the province has instructed localities, businesses, and service establishments to turn off unnecessary lighting and electrical devices both inside and outside office buildings and households during the Earth Hour event.

The Earth Hour 2025 campaign, with the message "Green Transition - Green Future," will feature the symbolic one-hour lights-off event from 8:30pm to 9:30pm on March 22 across the province.
