Earth Hour 2013 to take place

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Earth Hour event will be held from 20.30 to 21.30 on at the August Revolution Square in front of the Hanoi Opera House on March 23.

Government agencies, businesses, individuals and communities will switch off their lights and reduce power usage for this hour to show their support for actions toward environmental sustainability.

From 2013, the Earth Hour event around the world will be held a week earlier - on the Saturday before the last Saturday of March. This change is because the last Saturday of March is the start of summer in Europe and coincides with religious holidays in many countries.

In addition, there are many activities within the Earth Hour this year such as: the Ambassador of Earth Hour will launch the campaign at universities in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City; he will also bicycle with volunteers, distribute flyers, put up posters in public places, offices, commercial and apartment areas in Hanoi.

Also related to this event, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has just launched a short film-making competition in response to the Earth Hour 2013 campaign nationwide. It aims to attract the attention of society to the issue of saving energy and fighting against climate change.

These short films should be no longer than 10 minutes, with unique and creative expression. Categories include: feature films, documentary, reportage, animation, and more. The contest will give the public a broader view about the issue of energy savings and environmental protection.

The contest encourages all participants to enter short films, as an act of joining hands with Earth Hour 2013. The films will focus on environmental and energy issues. Videos are to be sent to the organizers before 5pm on March 10, 2013. The film entries are expected to be aired and voted publicly in the cinema talent development support centre and Fafilm Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City.
