The 70th founding anniversary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was organized at Thang Long Imperial Citadel in Hanoi on November 23rd on the implementation of action plan No. 186/KH-UBND of the Hanoi city People’s Committee.
Addressing the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh said the program is connected with the National Tourism Year 2015 themed “Connecting World Heritage and 5th anniversary of Thang Long Imperial Citadel was listed in UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.
He also hailed the organisation’s great contributions to the community in the fields of education and culture and expressed his hope that the organisation will continue promoting a culture of peace, tolerance, and respect for cultures. The event was an opportunity to review UNESCO’s achievements during 70 years of establishment and development.
On the occasion, the Minister of Foreign Affairs presented the third class Labour Order to the Thang Long Heritage Preservation Centre, Hanoi and the Friendship Order to Head of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam Katherine Muller-Marin.
Vietnam is home to 22 world heritage items recognised by UNESCO, including two natural heritage sites (Ha Long Bay and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park), five cultural heritages (the Central Sector of the Thang Long Imperial Citadel, the Ho Dynasty Citadel, the Complex of Hue Monuments, Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary) and one mixed heritage (Trang An Landscape Complex).
Acting a specialized agency of the UN, UNESCO contributes to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedom proclaimed in the UN Charter. Besides, it is the heir of the League of Nations' International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation.
