Although Lunar New Year (Tet) is nearly three weeks away, Vietnam’s most celebrated holiday seems to come early to Ho Chi Minh’s Chinatown area, where shops liven up by selling typical splashy Tet ornaments.
Hai Thuong Lan Ong Street in Ho Chi Minh has been home to a neighborhood of Chinese Vietnamese for hundreds of years. Besides being known for selling traditional herbal medicines, local businesses offering seasonal decorative items and ornaments for special occasions like Christmas have flourished recently. However, the area’s busiest time of the year is before Lunar New Year.
Local shops sell everything from artificial New Year flowers like cherry blossoms or yellow apricots, red envelopes, and couplets, to other ornaments.
